What constitutes a cult? When does a charismatic thinker or preacher become a guru or a cult leader and what are the underlying personality characteristics of such people?

Ambrose Bierce once reviewed a book remarking “The covers of this book are too far apart”. The absolute opposite is true of the late Anthony Storr’s book “Feet of Clay. A Study of Gurus”. 10 widely differing men feature in the work from Jim Jones and David Khoresh to Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. There are also informative chapters on Ignatius Loyola, Jesus of Nazareth and Rudolf Steiner as well as shrewd observations on the characteristics of gurus, the term being used in a deprecatory sense of the term. John Hawkins will be discussing the very important issues raised by Storr’s absorbing and controversial book.
