Politics and Humanism

The  next meeting of the Hull and East Riding Humanist Group will be at 7.30pm on Monday 28th April in “the snug” room at the back of the Tiger Inn, Lairgate, Beverley.

In politics the terms Left and Right were coined during the French Revolution, referring to the seating arrangement in the Estates General. Those who sat on the left generally supported the radical changes of the revolution, including the creation of a republic and secularization. Those who sat on the right supported preserving the institutions of the monarchy, the aristocracy and the established church. Group secretary Tim Stephenson will be talking about how the emerging science of evolutionary psychology has much to say on the origins of the split between conservative, liberal and socialist mindsets and how these relate to religious belief and atheism. All welcome.
