Einstein’s Adventure in Time and Space and his Two Paradoxes

November 18 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Our November meeting will be a talk by John Hawkins. As well as being one of the most famous Humanists and Rationalists of the twentieth century, Albert Einstein’s Special and General Theories of Relativity made him the most famous scientist of the previous century.  John will outline his life and scientific achievements, focussing on the Special Theory’s Clock Paradox, also known as the Twin Paradox, and the paradox of Einstein’s conversion from pacifism in World War I, when in late 1914 with 3 other scientists he signed the ‘Manifesto of the Europeans’, opposing the outbreak of the war, to his signing of a letter on 2 August 1939 to President Roosevelt, which led to the Manhattan Project, the first atomic bombs and the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. John has identified a 3rd Einstein paradox which he will explain if questioned about it after his talk.

All Welcome.
