A Secular Understanding of Religious Art and Architecture

December 16 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

How can a non-believer accurately observe a religious ritual? Or properly understand a religious building if they are not using it for its intended purpose? And how can we be certain what that purpose was? December’s talk by architectural historian Lucia Crowther will be an exploration of religious art and architecture, as Lucia draws on examples from her research into Italian pilgrimage sites to explore the rewards and contradictions of studying religious architecture and rituals from an outsider’s point of view. Topics of discussion will include processions in St. Peter’s square in Rome, the world’s longest portico in Bologna, and the so-called ‘Sacred Mountains’ of northern Italy.
