When is a Joke Not a Joke?

March 16 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Kevin Precious is a comedian, promotor and member of the executive committee of Hull and East Riding Humanist Group. He says of his talk:

“When is a joke not a joke? When it’s offensive, apparently… whether it’s a by-product of the social media age, or just plain old puritanism dressed up in a new guise, there is currently a great amount of debate with regards to what constitutes offence in comedy/satire. Witness, the recent prosecution of Count Dankula and his ‘Nazi Pug Video’, or more recently still, the call for the BBC to sack Jo Brand on the basis of her ‘battery acid versus milkshake’ joke. Certainly there are plenty of precedents when it comes to the notion of satire challenging accepted norms, and the associated arguments relating to freedom of expression: the many trials of Lenny Bruce, and the accusations of blasphemy directed at Monty Python’s ‘Life of Brian’ immediately come to mind. In the current climate however, it is said that the biggest pushback against offense in comedy, is coming from the left rather than the right, and that ‘freedom of speech’ is under threat not so much from the traditional forces of conservatism, but more from the radical left who wish to systematically erase anything that does not fit in with a prevailing ideology.”
